Masters of Sweat: Meet Erica

“I felt motivated to become an instructor so I could help others find joy and positivity in their fitness journeys.”

Why did you want to join the Sweat Club team?

I’ve been wanting to join the Sweat Club team for a while now. It has been on the back of my mind as an interest and challenge I’ve wanted to take on. I’ve been a client at Sweat Club since it opened. The community and instructors have had such a positive impact on my life, both physically and mentally. Knowing all of this, I felt motivated to become an instructor so I could help others find joy and positivity in their fitness journeys.

How did you get into the fitness industry?

Growing up, I was a competitive synchronized swimmer. Being physically active has always been a part of my life. After high school until about five years ago, my dedication fluctuated for various reasons. When I finally committed to Sweat Club, I was able to rebuild my relationship with fitness and find a healthier way of life. It’s become a staple part of my weekly routine and it’s hard to imagine life without fitness.

When you're not training at Sweat Club, what fills your days?

Outside of Sweat Club, I am an elementary school teacher. I teach grade 4 on the Northside at Gibson-Neill. My students keep me on my toes and I get so much joy from working with little minds every day.

I have a 5-year-old black lab named Jet. We love to walk in the woods each day. We spend lots of time in O’Dell.

I’m also a proud Aunty to my three nieces, Tenley, Winnie, Phoebe and my nephew Louis.

In the past two years, I’ve taken on running as a sport. Starting with my first 10K race in May 2022, I built up to run my first full marathon in May of 2023. Running is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. It allows me to set goals, challenge myself and learn my limits and how to push them when needed. I’ve also met some really amazing people along the way. This year I’m training for two full marathons. The Fredericton full in May and the Chicago Marathon in October (my first world major ).

WHAT IS ONE BOOK, PODCAST, OR RESOURCE YOU WOULD RECOMMEND TO OUR COMMUNITY?

Lately, I’ve been hooked on the podcast “Darling Shine”. This is a podcast by two women in their 30s from Australia. They touch on grief, friendship, fertility, womanhood and everything in between. They both have unique stories to share and have lots of awesome guests. It’s worth a listen!
