Masters of Sweat: Meet Cassidy
Why did you want to join the Sweat Club team?
I was first introduced to Sweat Club back in December of 2020 - I stumbled upon Lauras’ LC 28-Day Challenge through Instagram. I, like many, was feeling demotivated by the pandemic and knew I had to do something to get my butt in gear, for both my mental and physical health. I completed 3 back-to-back challenges and felt a complete shift in my overall well-being. I found joy in working out again! I felt immense support from the other community members, and Laura, throughout the entire experience, which motivated me to try out my first class, which was taught by Jodie! From the moment I stepped foot into the gym space, I felt a sense of community, inspiration, and comfort. Every single person who comes through the Sweat Club doors is in a different chapter of their fitness journey, and I think that is what makes it so special - it gives members, and myself, a sense of belonging. These experiences would not be possible without the incredible women who make it all happen, which is why I knew I wanted to be a part of it all. Being someone's motivation for the day, allowing them to feel confident in our space, and push themselves further than they may think they can go, makes every second worth it!
How did you get into the fitness industry?
I was a competitive dancer from the age of 7-23, competing with a private company until I graduated high school, then competing with the UNB Dance team during my four years at UNB. Growing up, although not necessarily knowing the importance of it all, fitness was always a big part of my life. I completed my undergraduate degree in Kinesiology in May 2020. During my studies, I completed two concurrent practicums in Athletic Therapy and Strength and Conditioning, both with the UNB Reds’ Women’s Basketball Team. I truly believe these two practicums single-handedly shaped my overall perspective on fitness and injury prevention. Developing training programs for higher-level athletes and observing the direct impacts specific training has on the body was extremely motivational for my overall fitness journey, and I learned more in those experiences than any textbook could ever teach. I know I will not have a career as a high-level athlete (that ship has sailed), but having a career where I can push others to their peak performance, whatever that may look like, is so fulfilling, and in turn, allows me to push myself to be my best as well.
When you're not training at Sweat Club, what fills your days?
When I am not training at Sweat Club, you can find me down the street bartending and serving at Gahan Riverside! One thing about me - I LOVE to talk, like a lot! I’ve been working in the hospitality industry since before I graduated from university, and honestly, the best part about it is that I never run out of people to talk to. The days can be long and end quite late, but I do enjoy what I do. When I’m not at Sweat Club or Gahan though, you can find me at the gym or spending time at home with my amazing fiance, Zak, and our two kitties, Maeve and Willie!
What is one thing you wished you learned earlier on your fitness journey?
The one thing I wished I learned earlier on my fitness journey is you have to enjoy it to stick with it! It’s not easy - plain and simple. If you truly do not enjoy going to the gym, running outside, or going to cycling classes, then you’re doing yourself a disservice. Life is too short to be forcing yourself to do something you don’t like. Do you know what the good news is? Your body WANTS to move but in its own way! Just because one thing didn’t work, does not mean nothing will. Moving the way your body likes to will make your body crave it. At the end of the day, what works for you, works for YOU, and that’s all that matters. There’s no rule book on fitness, and the options out there are endless. At the end of the day, it’s all about you and how you feel, and your fitness journey is something you should be 100% selfish over.
What is your favourite thing about Sweat Club?
My favourite thing about Sweat Club is the community - hands down! Each and every one of you inspires me. Being able to sit back and watch you all show up, work hard, and push yourselves is such an honour, and I cannot express enough how incredibly grateful I am for every one of you, even if I haven’t met you yet.
It’s hard for me to put into words how thankful I am to be given this opportunity to be a part of the team of strong and hardworking women who have shaped Sweat Club into what it is today. I also want to thank every member of Sweat Club for trusting me in aiding you in your fitness journey and for being so supportive during my transition into this space. I appreciate you all, and if I haven’t had the opportunity to meet you yet, just know I see you and all your hard work - You got this!!
Much love!
