Masters of Sweat: Meet Katie

I love our clients and the inspiring community we’ve built at our small but mighty gym.

Why did you want to be on the Sweat Club Team?

Laura had an amazing vision for Sweat Club from the beginning and I knew I wanted to be a part of it! Laura’s values aligned with my own, I LOVE teaching group fitness, and I’ve always enjoyed a small, studio vibe over a large gym…so I knew Sweat Club was a perfect fit.

Shortly before Sweat Club opened, the studio I was teaching at closed suddenly, so I was thrilled and grateful to be invited to be a part of the Sweat Club team.

How did you get into the fitness industry and why do you love teaching at Sweat Club?

I’ve always been active and interested in nutrition (thanks to my uber-healthy mother), and about ten years ago while living in Australia I had the opportunity to take my group & personal training certifications. It seemed so natural to work in health and fitness, so a couple of years later I completed intensive yoga teacher training in Bali to expand my knowledge and open more doors within the industry. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done.

Now, many years later, I’m lucky to be able to apply my knowledge and training in Sweat Club’s amazing environment. I love our clients and the inspiring community we’ve built at our small but mighty gym.

What is one thing you wished you learned earlier in the fitness industry, or that you wish you could change?

I wish I could change the emphasis on people’s weight and extreme diet culture. Fad diets and quick fixes simply don’t work. Dramatically restricting food intake (and over-exercising) is not healthy and definitely not sustainable.

As health advocates, we must educate our clients and guide them to a realistic and balanced lifestyle that works for them as an individual. I think there should be less importance placed on calories burned and/or eaten and more focus on how movement and good food makes us FEEL.

On top of being a trainer at Sweat Club, you’re a busy student working towards earning your degree in Interior Design. Do you have any tips for balancing studying, working, and working out?

Enrolling in a full-time online degree last year was a major learning curve and I quickly realized the importance of time management.

Working from home requires discipline (as many people now know due to Covid), so I rise at the same time every day for a big healthy breakfast, designate “blocks” of time to my studies, and always make sure to get outside for some fresh air and movement.

I’m fortunate to have a well-equipped home gym that allows me to squeeze in a little workout during a break from school.

It’s funny, I used to hate winter, but I’ve learned that the best way to beat the cold is to embrace it! I love to downhill and cross country ski (despite being terrible at both), snowshoe, and simply trek through the woods with my dog. Nothing like being in the woods after a fresh snowfall! It’s magical.

You are a true outdoor enthusiast. What’s your favourite outdoor activity in the Winter?
